I am an actor and teacher that is an avid D&D player. I think that D&D, as a storytelling device, is not just fun but also gives a chance to allow creativity and improvisation and working together in a collaborative way. In D&D the DM is not the only storyteller, but works with the players to help them create the story. I want players to have ideas and backstories that I can help bring to life. If you want to be a fighter that only cares about smashing stuff, great! I'll find things to smash. If you want to be a magic user that is trying to find a secret to save your family, I'll find a way to incorporate that into the campaign. You and your team will have to work together to achieve your goals as individual characters and as a team. My job is to put challenges in front of you and then we all work together to tell that story...as well as the dice that balance all of our decisions and brings chance into your choices. Because you can’t always do everything you want...but if the dice are in your favor....maybe you can. And then you make the next choice after that.
