I teach sewing, both by machine and by hand. I teach in a totally hands-on manner, working side by side with the students to foster confidence in their skills and abilities. General foundational skills will be taught, as well as completion of projects, leaving lots of room for students to make personal aesthetic choices.

My passion for sewing began as a young child. I received my first sewing machine at age five and I’ve been stitching ever since. Later, I found a love for art and theater, and these passions came together in the field of costuming. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in costume design and worked for several years in professional theater, eventually becoming a master stitcher at the Los Angeles Opera.

I left the professional theater world to pursue my greatest passion to date: homeschooling my children. Through raising my kids and homeschooling them, I have discovered a love for nurturing families with respect and empathy. I became an accredited La Leche League Leader in 2011 and a certified Attached At The Heart Parent Educator in 2013.

There are many opportunities to promote a wide range of skills through sewing instruction. Sewing is all about geometry; using shapes and measurements to manipulate a 2D medium into 3D objects. There are many avenues, through the study of textiles and fashion, to learn about world cultures as well as important historical eras and events. Students can begin to develop an artistic sensibility through fabric choices and design. Fine motor and executive function skills are honed as the student progresses in their sewing abilities. Important fundamentals of home economics are also introduced, such as budgeting, gaining the skill to mend and alter one’s own clothing, and becoming a more informed consumer through learning about clothing value and construction.
